Submagic vs VEED: Captions Tool or Full Editor?

Submagic sells credits for short captioned videos with a length cap per plan, while VEED sells a browser editor per user with unlimited auto subtitles from its first plan.

Pick Submagic when captions on short vertical videos are the whole job, and VEED when you need a full editor. VEED Creator is $147 a year per user with unlimited auto subtitles, while Submagic Starter is $19 a month for 45 credits and caps each video at 2 minutes. GPT-Video is a third option if you clip long recordings.

The short answer

These two overlap on subtitles and little else. Submagic is a caption-first editor for short vertical videos, sold as monthly credits with a length cap on each plan. VEED is a general browser editor sold per user, where subtitles are one tool among many.

The cap decides a lot. Submagic Starter takes videos up to 2 minutes, and VEED's Clips tool wants a source longer than two minutes. Neither tool is better across the board, so the sections below set out what each plan holds and who it suits. Every figure was read from public pages on 2026-10-04.

Submagic at a glance

Submagic meters in credits. One credit pays for a minute or less, and a partial minute is rounded up: 30 seconds costs 1 credit and 61 seconds costs 2. Each plan also quotes a video count, since credits are spent per video processed.

The $19 monthly tier, Starter, buys 45 credits, which the page translates into 15 videos of 2 minutes at most. That works out near $0.42 a credit ($19 divided by 45). Inside are AI captions, removal of silences and bad takes, hook titles, caption translation and 1080p 30 FPS export with no watermark. Pro costs $39 for 120 credits, or 40 videos of up to 5 minutes, and brings premium templates, premium B-roll and a brand kit. Per credit that is about $0.33 ($39 divided by 120). At the top, Business charges $69 for 300 credits, or 100 videos of up to 30 minutes, with 4K at 60 FPS and priority rendering. Per credit that is about $0.23 ($69 divided by 300).

Billed yearly, the three monthly rates drop to $12, $23 and $41. Twelve months of Starter then come to $144 ($12 times 12), and twelve months of Pro to $276 ($23 times 12). No standing no-cost plan is listed. The help center mentions a trial limited to 3 short videos with a watermark. Submagic also lists an MCP server, a REST API and scheduling. Nothing public says if leftover credits roll over.

VEED at a glance

VEED starts from the editor. In the browser you get subtitles, avatars, dubbing, a split screen tool, AI voice and a Clips tool that cuts a long video into shorts and keeps the speaker centred. Its pricing page counts AI credits and "AI videos" per year, not source minutes, so a price per minute of clipping cannot be derived from it.

The prices that could be read are yearly and per user. Creator is $147, Pro is $265 and Studio is $465. Creator removes the watermark, lists unlimited auto subtitles and exports as high as 1080p. Pro layers on several brand kits, translation into 50+ languages, a yearly allowance of up to 144 hours of AI voice and 4K export. Studio brings custom templates and an allowance of up to 960 hours of AI voice. Monthly prices were not read.

A no-cost plan exists, limited to 720p with a watermark. Per VEED's terms, unspent credits lapse once the subscription period ends. On the developer side there is an API for generated video, plus a Subtitles API on fal.ai from $0.10 a minute. The MCP server produces talking-avatar video rather than clips.

Where GPT-Video fits as a third option

Our own product, so discount accordingly. GPT-Video is neither a VEED-style editor nor a captions specialist. It begins one step earlier, with an uploaded long recording. It transcribes the audio, ranks the moments, and tells you why each one was chosen, naming the opening hook. Faces are tracked for the vertical crop and captions get added. To alter a clip, tell the Editor Assistant what you want different; each edit can be reverted. See vibe editing and the AI captions page.

Its meter is the minute of source video. At Standard quality one credit equals one minute, so the $19 Starter plan carries 250 credits, and each source minute works out near $0.076 once $19 is split across them. The same $19 on Submagic Starter carries 45 credits, near $0.42 each, which makes a minute more than five times dearer there, although Submagic also bundles scheduling and an API. Creator costs $49 for 800 credits and exports 4K.

What you give up: posting and scheduling are absent, so are link imports (the file must be uploaded), the REST API is held back for Creator and Studio, and no plan is free for the long term. A new account is offered free access after email confirmation instead, which means 50 credits for a 14-day period and no card, as long as places remain. Which to pick

Begin with how long your videos run. Under 2 minutes, with captions needed fast, Submagic Starter is built for that, at $19 a month, and yearly billing lowers it to $12. If editing and subtitles must live in a single tool, VEED Creator costs $147 a year for one person, which is $3 above twelve months of Submagic Starter at $144 ($147 minus $144).

Then count seats. VEED prices each one, so five people on Creator pay $735 a year. Submagic's three standard plans show no seat count, and only its Custom plan names team members, so ask before building a team around it. When the job is turning hour-long recordings into clips and the exported file is the finish line, look at GPT-Video.

The verdict

Which one to pay for

Choose Submagic if

  • Your videos are short and vertical, and captions are what you spend your time on. The product is built around AI captions, hook titles and silence removal.
  • You want to schedule posts from the same screen. Submagic lists scheduling, and its plans include 1 to 3 social profiles.
  • You pay yearly and want a low entry. Starter falls to $12 a month and Pro to $23 a month, against $19 and $39 when paid monthly.
  • You build on an API. All paid plans list 100 API minutes a month, with one key shared by the REST API and the MCP server.
  • You need 4K at 60 FPS. The Business plan has it.

Choose VEED if

  • You edit whole videos, not only captions. VEED is a browser editor with 15+ AI tools, a split screen editor and AI voice.
  • Your source runs long and you want subtitles on all of it. Creator lists unlimited auto subtitles with no stated cap on length.
  • You need a no-cost way to look around first. VEED has a no-cost plan, with 720p exports and a watermark.
  • You work in a team. Prices are per user and Enterprise adds centrally managed teams and a review mode.
  • You want 4K without paying for the top plan. Pro exports up to 4K, as does Studio.

Choose GPT-Video if

  • You start from a long recording and want the clips picked for you, with the hook and the line that earned each pick on screen.
  • You count cost in source minutes. Starter is $19 for 250 credits, so a minute costs $0.076 at Standard.
  • You prefer to describe a change in chat and let the Editor Assistant apply it, with every change undoable.
  • You want the reframe to follow the speaker's face without drawing it yourself.
  • You post by hand or through your own scheduler, since GPT-Video ends at the exported file.

Questions

Is Submagic or VEED better for subtitles?

VEED if you subtitle a lot of video, because Creator lists unlimited auto subtitles. Submagic if the work is short vertical clips, since captions, hook titles and caption translation sit in its $19 Starter plan, but that plan holds 45 credits and videos of at most 2 minutes.

How long a video can each tool take?

Submagic states a maximum per video on every plan: 2 minutes on Starter, 5 on Pro and 30 on Business. VEED's Clips tool needs a video longer than two minutes with spoken audio, and the pages read do not state an upper limit.

What does Submagic cost for one minute of video?

One credit covers up to a minute and part minutes round up. Starter is $19 for 45 credits, about $0.42 a credit. Pro is $39 for 120 credits, about $0.33. Business is $69 for 300 credits, about $0.23, all on monthly billing.

Does VEED charge per user?

Yes. The yearly prices are $147 for Creator, $265 for Pro and $465 for Studio, each per user. Five people on Creator come to $735 a year ($147 times 5). Enterprise is custom, and its price is not published.

Do unused credits carry over on Submagic and VEED?

VEED says they do not. Its terms state unused credits expire at the end of the subscription period. Submagic's pricing page and credits article do not say either way, so this page makes no claim for it.

Can either tool post my videos for me?

Submagic can: its homepage describes picking platforms and publishing from the editor, though it does not list which platforms. For VEED Clips, the pages read only mention downloading, editing or sharing clips, and no scheduling feature was found.
