What a crop keeps, by shape
Cropping cuts the edges off every frame. The part you keep is not scaled, so the new video is exactly as wide and as tall as the box. Resizing is the other job: it fits the whole frame into a new shape. The table shows the largest box of each shape from three common video sizes.
| Crop to | From 1920 × 1080 | From 3840 × 2160 | From 1080 × 1920 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9:16 vertical | 608 × 1080 | 1214 × 2158 | 1080 × 1920 (the whole frame) |
| 1:1 square | 1080 × 1080 | 2160 × 2160 | 1080 × 1080 |
| 4:5 portrait | 864 × 1080 | 1728 × 2160 | 1080 × 1350 |
| 16:9 wide | 1920 × 1080 (the whole frame) | 3840 × 2160 (the whole frame) | 1080 × 608 |
The box is one fixed rectangle for the whole video, so it cannot follow anyone who moves. Video sizes have to be even numbers, so a locked box is within one pixel of its shape: 608 × 1080 is 9:16 to within a tenth of a percent. A crop writes the video again, and any sound is kept. A browser without WebCodecs cannot run the tool, and a very large file can run out of memory on a phone.
How it works
Open the video. Choose your video, or drag it onto the page. The tool reads its size and length, then shows a frame from the first second. A slider lets you look at other moments.
Draw the box. Drag the box to move it, and drag a corner or an edge to resize it. Choose Free, or lock it to 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9. You can also type the left, top, width and height in pixels.
Save the MP4. Press Crop video and wait for the bar to finish. The result plays on the page with its size printed beside it, and the download is an MP4 with only the area inside the box.
What you get
- Lock a shape or draw your own
- Free mode cuts any rectangle, which is what removes black bars or a logo in a corner. The locked shapes keep 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9 while you drag, so the result is ready for a vertical feed or a post.
- See the output size first
- The size of the new video is printed under the preview and changes as the box moves. You read it before you export, and the file you download has that size.
- Type the numbers
- If dragging is awkward on a phone, the left, top, width and height boxes take exact pixels, and the box on the preview follows them.
- Nothing is stretched
- The part you keep goes through at its own size. If you then need exactly 1080 × 1920, the video resizer does the scaling and tells you when that enlarges the picture.
Questions people ask
How do I crop a video online?
Drop your video on the box, drag the outlined box over the part you want to keep, and press Crop video. The tool writes a new MP4 with only that area, and you download it from the same page. The video is read and saved inside your browser.
How do I crop a video to 9:16?
Choose 9:16 under Shape and drag the box until it frames your subject, then press Crop video. From a 1920 × 1080 video the largest 9:16 box is 608 × 1080, which keeps the full height and about 32% of the width. It is not scaled up to 1080 × 1920.
What is the difference between cropping and resizing a video?
Cropping cuts the edges off the frame and keeps the rest at its own size, so the video gets smaller. Resizing changes the whole frame to a new shape or size, by scaling it or by adding bars. To crop to 9:16 and then reach exactly 1080 × 1920, crop here and open the video resizer.
Can I crop a video without losing quality?
The part you keep is not scaled, but the video is encoded again, so the file is not a bit-for-bit copy. A crop has to do that, because every frame changes. The result is an MP4 with H.264 video, and the original sound is kept.
Can I crop a video on my phone?
Yes, in a mobile browser that has WebCodecs: Chrome on Android, or Safari 16.4 or newer on an iPhone (26 or newer for full audio support). Dragging works with a finger, and the number boxes work too. A long 4K video can need more memory than a phone has, so trim it first.
Why does a crop have to be an even number of pixels?
Video encoders store colour at half the width and half the height of the picture, so an odd size does not fit. The box snaps to even sizes. When you lock a shape, the height is the nearest even number to the exact one, so it is never more than a pixel off.
Is my video uploaded when I crop it?
No. The file is read inside this browser tab, every frame is cropped there, and the MP4 is written there too. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is no upload to wait for and nothing to delete afterwards.
A fixed box can lose a moving speaker
The box here stays in one place for the whole video, so a person who walks out of it walks out of the shot. GPT-Video's auto reframe follows the speaker's face and moves a 9:16 window with it, and it also picks the clips out of a long video.
