Starting settings by kind of recording
Three sliders decide what counts as a pause. The threshold is how quiet a stretch has to be: the tool measures loudness every 20 milliseconds, and whatever falls below the line is silence. The minimum silence is the shortest pause worth cutting, so the breaths between words survive. Padding is the slice of each pause left beside the speech, so words keep their first and last sounds. Start from the row closest to your recording, then watch the shaded spans on the waveform as you adjust.

These are recommendations to start from, not measurements: every microphone and room is different, and the waveform has the final word. How the numbers work: a 20 ms window counts as silent when its RMS loudness is below the threshold, in dBFS, where 0 dB is the loudest a digital file can hold. The slider runs from -60 dB, where only near-silence counts as a pause, to -20 dB, where only loud passages stay above the line. A quiet stretch at least as long as the minimum silence is cut, and a pause of length P between two words becomes a cut of P minus twice the padding (P minus the padding at the very start or end of the file). A cut that would come out shorter than 0.05 s is left in. Fast, continuous speech can have no pause long enough at the defaults; the tool then says that nothing is cut, and a higher threshold or a shorter minimum is the way to look for shorter gaps.
How it works

Move the three sliders. Every shaded span on the waveform is a pause that will go. The line underneath counts the cuts, the time removed and the new length, and it changes as you drag. Press play to hear the result with the cuts skipped.
Export, or take the cut list. Save a video as MP4, or an audio file as MP3 or WAV. To make the edit in your own software instead, download the cut list: every kept range with its start and end, one per line.

How do I remove silence from a video automatically?
Drop the video into the tool above, keep the default settings (threshold -40 dB, minimum silence 0.5 s, padding 0.1 s) and press Remove the pauses. The shaded spans on the waveform show what will be cut before anything is exported, and the result downloads as an MP4.
Will the cuts sound choppy?
Not if you leave some padding. With 0.1 s kept on each side of the speech, words keep their soft starts and trailing consonants; at zero padding a cut lands right at the edge of the sound and can clip a breath or the end of a word. In a noisy room the background also jumps at each cut, and a longer minimum silence means fewer jumps.
Does removing silence lower the video quality?
The picture keeps its original resolution, but it is encoded again, because a cut can fall between two keyframes and only a new encode can cut there. Like any export from an editor, the result is a fresh encode rather than a bit-for-bit copy of the original. For audio, WAV output is uncompressed and MP3 is encoded at 192 kbps.
What format does the finished file come in?
A video comes back as MP4 with H.264 picture and AAC sound, the pairing that plays on practically every phone and computer; a browser that cannot encode H.264 gets WebM instead. An audio file comes back as MP3 or as WAV, whichever you pick; WAV is the better choice if you will keep editing it.
Can I remove silence from a video on my phone?
Yes, in a recent Chrome on Android, or in Safari on an iPhone running iOS 26 or newer; older Safari versions lack the audio decoding the tool relies on. It works just as it does on a computer, though a long recording takes longer and needs more memory on a phone.
How long does it take to cut the pauses out?
Measuring the sound is the quick part, because only the audio is decoded; the export takes longer, because the whole video is encoded again. The progress bar shows how far along it is. Keep the tab in front while it runs, since browsers slow down background tabs.
Is my recording uploaded to find the silences?
No. Your browser measures the loudness and makes the cuts on your own device, so nothing about the recording, not even its waveform, is sent anywhere.
