Getting a clean key
Most bad keys come from a handful of causes, each with a matching fix. This is advice drawn from how chroma keying works, not a measurement of your footage: find the row that matches the preview and change the setting it names.

Two stable facts behind the green-versus-blue advice in the questions below: most camera sensors have twice as many green photosites as red or blue (the Bayer pattern), so green is recorded with the most detail; and 4:2:0 video stores color at a quarter of the resolution of brightness, which is why compressed footage keys with softer edges than the picture suggests.
How it works
Drop your green screen clip. The tool reads one frame, samples the edges of the picture and picks the backdrop color automatically. If it cannot find one, click the backdrop in the preview with the eyedropper, or start from the Green or Blue preset.
Tune the key on a real frame. Raise Similarity until the backdrop is gone, set Smoothness for a natural edge and Spill reduction to clear the tint on hair. Scrub to a frame where the subject moves to check it.
Choose what goes behind and export. Pick a solid color, an image of your own (cropped to fill the frame) or Transparent. Color and image export an MP4 with the original sound; Transparent exports a WebM with an alpha channel.
What you get

- The edges of the frame are where a screen almost always is, so the tool reads them and picks the dominant green or blue, set towards its duller shades so more of the shadowed screen is keyed, but never so dull that gray parts of the subject go with it.
- Every slider move is visible at once
- The key runs on your graphics chip with WebGL2, so the preview redraws while you drag. Without WebGL2 the processor takes over: slower, same math.
- Purer patches of the screen are keyed too
- Parts of the screen of the same hue and more saturated than the sampled color count as backdrop, however bright they are. Only duller or washed-out patches, such as a glare that turns pale, need a higher Similarity.
- Transparent output for layering
- Choose Transparent to get a WebM with VP9 video and an alpha channel, where the removed pixels are fully see-through. Chrome and Edge show the transparency; Safari does not, and editors differ, so check that yours imports VP9 with alpha before you build on it.
Questions people ask
How do I remove a green screen from a video without software?
Open this page, drop the clip and export: the key is applied in the browser tab, so there is nothing to install. It needs a browser with WebCodecs, such as a current Chrome or Edge on a computer.
Should I use a green or a blue screen?
Green by default: cameras record green with the most detail, it is far from skin tones, and it suits a subject in blue or denim. Pick blue when the subject wears green, or for blond hair that picks up green spill; blue spill shows less on skin, but a blue screen needs more light to key cleanly.
Does keying lower the quality of my video?
The resolution stays the same, but the video is re-encoded once, as with any editor that changes the picture. Color and image backgrounds come out as H.264 in MP4. Beyond that re-encode, the subject changes only where the key edge or spill reduction reaches it.
How do I get a video with a transparent background?
Choose Transparent and export: you get a WebM with VP9 video and an alpha channel, since H.264 in MP4 cannot store transparency. The option is disabled in browsers that cannot encode VP9 with alpha. Chrome and Edge show the transparency when they play the file; Safari does not.
How long does it take to remove a green screen from a video?
It depends on the clip's length, its resolution and your device, because every frame is decoded, keyed and encoded again. On our 8-second 1280×720 test clip, desktop Chrome took between 4 and 12 seconds across five runs, MP4 and transparent WebM alike, depending on what else the computer was doing. Keep the tab in front while it runs.
Can it remove a background that is not a green or blue screen?
No. It removes one color, so it needs a backdrop of a single, even color. Cutting a person out of an ordinary room needs segmentation, which this tool does not do.
Is my green screen footage uploaded anywhere?
No. The frames are decoded, keyed and encoded inside this tab, and a background image you add is read the same way.
