GPT-Video vs Zebracat: clips cut from your footage, or videos generated from text
Zebracat writes new videos from a prompt, a script or a link, while GPT-Video takes footage you already shot, cuts clips from it and hands you the file.
GPT-Video is the pick if footage exists and the job is turning it into clips. Starter is $19 a month against $39 on Zebracat's plan cards. Its eight-tool MCP connector asks before spending credits, and the product stops at the exported file, so no social account is connected. Zebracat generates videos from text and wins on API, scheduling and a no-cost plan.
The short answer
Zebracat and GPT-Video both end with a vertical video, but they start from different places. Zebracat takes a text prompt, a script, a blog link or an audio file and generates the video, with AI visuals, a voice and captions. GPT-Video takes a recording you already have, finds the moments worth keeping and cuts them into 9:16 clips.
Two parts of GPT-Video decide the choice for many buyers. Its MCP connector lets an assistant do the work while you keep the say over every credit spent. And the product stops at the exported file, which means no social account is ever connected. Zebracat is ahead on API, scheduling and a no-cost plan. The margin is spelled out further down.
Where GPT-Video is stronger
An assistant that asks before it spends. The MCP connector has eight tools. Six only read or set things up: they list projects, create one, show its status, set captions and length, list the clips found and report on a job. The other two do the paid work. find_clips transcribes the source and picks the moments, and export_clip renders one clip to MP4. Both need an explicit confirm, so whichever assistant you connect, be it Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, must put the request to you before any credit moves. Each connection also has an hourly ceiling on jobs that spend. Zebracat lists MCP connectors for Claude, Cursor and OpenAI agents. What its tools do, and whether any of them asks first, is not confirmed on the pages we read.
A product that ends at the file. Nothing here publishes or schedules, and no plan connects to a social account. For a solo creator that is a missing feature. For an agency it can be the reason to buy. The exported MP4 goes to the client, or into the scheduler the client already trusts, and nobody has to share channel logins with a clip tool. If your team has a rule about which apps may touch a brand's accounts, this product is already inside it.
It starts from footage. The source is transcribed and every moment gets a score. The crop then follows the person speaking, and every pick is written up with its first line and the reason it ranked where it did. See auto reframe. Zebracat's pages describe no long-video clipping and no face reframing, so for a podcast or a stream those are not confirmed.
Cheaper to begin. The first paid step on GPT-Video is Starter at $19 a month. On Zebracat's plan cards the first paid step is Cat Mode at $39. A worked month is further down.

Where Zebracat is stronger
- API. Zebracat exposes a REST API, keyed with an X-API-KEY header, with webhook callbacks and six endpoints. It covers video generation, translation, voice cloning, AI characters and scheduling. Its API page offers pay-as-you-go from $10, while its pricing page lists API access under Enterprise.
- Posting. It schedules and posts to social channels from the app and from the API. GPT-Video does neither.
- A no-cost plan and a guarantee. The pricing FAQ describes up to 5 videos at 720p and 30 seconds each, with no card, and the page advertises a 7-day money-back guarantee if no video was downloaded.
- Starting from nothing. If you have no footage, a generator can still produce a video. A clip cutter cannot.
- Avatars and translation. Paid tiers add avatars, voice clones and translation into 25+ languages.
On the GPT-Video side the list is short: no import from a link, no publishing, no scheduling. The file goes in by upload and the result goes out by your hand.
What a real month costs
Take a channel that wants 15 finished videos a month. On Zebracat, Cat Mode covers exactly that count, with 350 generative AI credits and videos up to 2 minutes. At $39 a month, that is $2.60 a video. Billed yearly it is $23 a month, which comes to $276 a year. The help center says the number of videos depends on the credits in the plan, and the pages do not say how many credits one video uses, so 15 may not always fit.
Now take a creator who records 4 hours in a month. Counted in minutes, 240 of them go in, and Standard quality uses 240 credits. Starter holds 250 and costs $19. Paid for 10 months out of 12, it is $190 a year. The count of clips is not metered, so the same 240 credits can produce few clips or many.
The monthly gap is $20, and the yearly gap is $86, since $276 minus $190 leaves $86. These buy different things: a batch of generated videos against clips from your own tape. Credits stay inside the billing month on both sides.
One warning about Zebracat's own numbers. Its pricing page shows two sets of prices. The plan cards say $39 and $99, and the FAQ on the same page says $29 and $79, with different yearly savings. We used the cards because they show the current plans. If the FAQ is the true list, the gap to Starter is smaller. Check the page on the day you buy.
What you give up by moving
Leaving Zebracat costs you generation from text, avatars, voice cloning, translation, its pay-as-you-go API, posting from the tool and the no-cost plan. You also need footage. The video has to be uploaded as a file. Even through the MCP connector, create_project only returns a link, and you drop the file in on that page.
You gain clips cut from material you made, a face-centered crop, written reasons for each pick, and an assistant that cannot spend your credits without asking. For faceless formats built from gameplay or stories, see faceless channels. To judge it, create an account and verify your address. The number of free access places is limited. A place holds 50 credits that last up to 14 days, and nobody asks for a card. Run one real recording through it and compare the clips with what you make today. Every tier and top-up is laid out on the pricing page.
The verdict
Which one to pay for
Choose Zebracat if
- You need a REST API with webhooks and a scheduling endpoint. It is sold pay-as-you-go from $10, while the REST API of GPT-Video starts on the Creator plan and has no scheduling endpoint.
- You want videos to be posted to your channels on a schedule, from the app or from code.
- You have no footage and want to start from a script, a blog link or a few lines of text.
- You want avatars, voice cloning or translation into 25+ languages on a paid tier.
- You want a no-cost plan backed by a refund promise on the paid ones. Its pricing FAQ describes a no-cost plan, and the page offers a 7-day money-back guarantee.
Choose GPT-Video if
- What you have is podcasts, streams or interviews, and the clips should come out of those.
- You want your AI assistant to run the clip search and the export, but only after it has checked with you.
- You hand clips to clients or a team and prefer that no tool holds a login to your social channels.
- You want the crop to follow whoever is talking, with the hook and the winning line written beside each pick.
- You want a lower entry price, $19 a month instead of $39 on its plan cards.

Questions
Is GPT-Video a good Zebracat alternative?
Yes, when you own long footage and want short clips from it. If you need videos generated from a script, avatars or posting on a schedule, stay with Zebracat, because it is built for those and GPT-Video is not. GPT-Video has a REST API too, but only on the Creator and Studio plans.
What is the difference between generating a video and cutting clips?
A generator writes the picture, the voice and the captions for you from text, so the result is new material. A clip cutter works on a recording you made, picks the moments worth keeping and crops them to 9:16. Zebracat's pages we read describe generation and no long-video clipping.
How does the GPT-Video MCP connector protect my credits?
Two of its eight tools spend plan credits, find_clips and export_clip, and both need an explicit confirm. That is what makes the assistant stop and ask you before it starts the work. Asking twice for the same job returns the one already running instead of charging again.
Why would I want a tool that does not post for me?
Nothing in GPT-Video connects to your social accounts, so there are no channel logins to hand over or reconnect, which suits agencies and teams. You post the exported file yourself or give it to the scheduler you already use. If you want posting inside the tool, Zebracat does that.
Does GPT-Video have a no-cost tier like Zebracat's?
Not a lasting tier. Clipping can start before you pay, because a new account that confirms its email gets free access, 50 credits for 14 days with no card, while places last. Starter at $19 a month is the first paid plan after that. The browser tools at /tools, such as the trimmer, the video to GIF tool and the safe zone checker, cost nothing and need no account. Zebracat's pricing FAQ describes a no-cost plan, but its plan cards do not show one.
