# Best Descript alternatives, sorted by how you edit

GPT-Video changes a clip when you write a request to Editor Assistant, and Starter costs $19 a month for 250 source minutes. Descript and Riverside edit through the transcript, Pictory builds from scripts, and CapCut, Kapwing and VEED are conventional editors. Where a monthly price could be read, one person's entry plan runs from $19 to $29.

## The short answer

Descript belongs to a crowded group of tools that begin with a recording, so the question worth asking is how you want to edit after the clips exist. That sets the order of this page. GPT-Video is ours and goes first, with its limits spelled out. Next come the tools that work on a transcript or a script: Descript, Riverside and Pictory. The final three are conventional editors: CapCut, Kapwing and VEED.

Within a group, the order follows what one person pays for the cheapest paid plan on monthly billing, lowest first. Two exceptions are flagged where they occur. Pictory trails Riverside because it starts from scripts, and VEED is last because only its yearly price could be read. All prices come from each tool's own pages, read on 2026-10-04.

What we offer is a different way to make a change. You tell Editor Assistant what you want, in a sentence, and the clip you are watching is edited. For someone who makes many small fixes a day, typing the fix can take less work than selecting words. If you need a recorder, voices or avatars, a few of the tools below fit better.

## 1. GPT-Video

GPT-Video is for people who would rather describe an edit than perform it. It reads a long recording, ranks the moments, prints the hook and the line behind each pick, holds the vertical crop on the speaker's face and captions the result. You write the change you want to Editor Assistant as plain text, and the clip changes on screen. Each change has an undo. More on [vibe editing](/vibe-editing).

The price is set per plan rather than per seat. Starter is $19 a month for 250 credits. One credit pays for one minute of your uploaded footage in Standard quality, which puts $19 over 250 at $0.076 a minute. Draft uses half a credit, so $0.038 a minute (0.076 × 0.5). Creator is $49 a month and has room for a small team.

Four limits apply. The free access is short. It holds 50 credits, expires after 14 days and is given to an account only once, and no permanent free plan follows it. Places for it are capped. Posting and scheduling are left to you. A file must be uploaded, since links are not accepted. For developers there is REST endpoints open to Creator and Studio users and an [MCP connector](/developers/mcp).

## 2. Descript

Descript is the tool this page is named after. Video is edited by deleting words in its transcript, while the Underlord AI editor takes care of captions, clips and filler words. Surrounding that are AI voices, text to speech, avatars, eye contact correction, green screen and B-roll. An API is open to every paying user, and an MCP server works with Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. For a direct comparison, read [GPT-Video vs Descript](/alternatives/descript).

Hobbyist is the cheapest paid plan. It costs $24 a month for each person, or $16 a month when billed annually, and brings 10 media hours plus 400 AI credits. Ten hours equals 600 minutes, so media works out near $0.04 a minute ($24 over 600). The plan at no cost grants 60 media minutes monthly, exported at 720p with a watermark. Three people on Hobbyist pay $72 a month (3 × $24).

Look at the meters before buying. Media time and AI credits are tracked apart, and unused amounts of both vanish at month end. Exporting media through the API is not supported yet. Its clip maker page talks about choosing transcript portions and says nothing on automatic reframing.

## 3. Riverside

Riverside is for people who record the conversation themselves. It captures separate audio and video tracks at up to 4K, then edits from the transcript, with unlimited text-based editing on Pro. Magic Clips start from a recording or an uploaded video and come out as 16:9, 1:1 or 9:16, reframed by speaker or topic. From the Grow plan up, its MCP server will schedule and publish to X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

Pro costs $29 a month, or $24 billed annually, for 5 hours of recording each month. That is $5.80 per recording hour ($29 over 5), a unit unlike a minute of uploaded source. The plan at no cost holds 2 hours of recording, granted once, at 720p.

The meter is the catch. Plans are sized in recording hours, and the pricing page gives no number of Magic Clips for any plan. API access appears only under the custom Business tier, and nothing describes face tracking.

## 4. Pictory

Pictory is for marketers and teams who begin with a script, an article or slides. It assembles videos from licensed stock footage and AI voices in 29 languages. Recordings work too, with text-based edits, auto captions and highlights, and exports come in vertical, landscape or square. A public API and an MCP server are both on offer.

Starter costs $29 a month, or $25 billed annually, covering one user and 200 video minutes a month. The meter counts minutes you export, so $29 over 200 is $0.145 per exported minute, a different unit from the source minutes GPT-Video counts. A 14-day trial opens every premium feature, though downloads stop when it ends unless you pay.

The limits sit around the account. Unused video minutes vanish when the month turns. Ending the subscription removes your video projects from the platform, so save the files first. The API is sold on its own page from $79 a month billed annually, and getting MCP credentials means emailing Pictory.

## 5. CapCut

CapCut is for people who already edit in one app across web, desktop and mobile. Its long video to shorts tool accepts a single file of up to 10 GB or 3 hours, converts horizontal footage to vertical while holding the subject in the middle, and publishes straight to TikTok and YouTube. Captions cover 20+ languages, and text to speech is included.

Pro is a flat $19.99 a month. Billed yearly it is $179.99, near $15 a month. A year of monthly payments comes to $239.88 (19.99 × 12), so the yearly route saves about a quarter. Team starts around $24.99 per user. A tier at no cost exists.

CapCut states that prices differ by region, platform and promotion, and its own pages disagree about which features need Pro. Nowhere we looked is an allowance per minute or per clip given for the shorts tool, which blocks any cost per source minute. We found no split screen.

## 6. Kapwing

Kapwing is for creators who want one browser editor for more than clipping. Repurpose Studio handles videos up to three hours, keeps whoever is talking centred through Auto Speaker Focus, gives you 9:16 clips unless you change it, and offers subtitles in 100+ languages. Elsewhere in the app sit a split screen editor, fake text message video templates, text to speech, dubbing and lip sync. A Kapwing MCP connector exists for upload, subtitles, translation and dubbing, and none of its listed tools generate clips.

Pro is $24 a month, or $16 billed annually, and holds 1,000 credits. Subtitles use 1 credit a minute, which prices a credit at $0.024 ($24 over 1,000). What a Repurpose run spends was not found. The no-cost tier offers 10 credits, 720p video and a watermark.

On the first of every month credits reset, and leftovers disappear. Repurpose wants an input of 10 minutes or more. Pro and Business come with no trial and no refund once you subscribe, and no REST API is documented.

## 7. VEED

VEED is for people who want a browser editor with a long list of AI tools. Its Clips tool re-centres the speaker, and the rest covers subtitles, avatars, dubbing, a split screen editor and AI voice. On the developer side sits a usage-priced API with Node and Go SDKs. Its MCP server is built to produce talking-avatar video, which is another job from clipping.

Plans are shown by the year. Creator is $147 for each user annually, which averages $12.25 a month ($147 over 12), and includes 6,000 AI credits, unlimited auto subtitles and 1080p export. Pro is $265 per user per year and brings 4K. Monthly prices were not readable, which is why VEED comes last. A free plan exists, at 720p with a watermark.

Clips only runs on a video longer than two minutes that has spoken audio. The pricing page sells AI credits and "AI videos", with no stated allowance of source minutes. Credits expire when the subscription period ends.

## How to choose

Decide by how the work gets done, then look at what the plan counts.

- **Choose Descript** if you edit full episodes, want voices and avatars in the same app, or need an API. Study its two meters before committing.
- **Choose Riverside** if the recording happens in your own studio session and you want the clips made from that same place.
- **Choose Pictory** if your videos start life as a script or an article rather than a long recording.
- **Choose CapCut** if you already cut on a phone or desktop and want to publish to TikTok and YouTube from the one app.
- **Choose Kapwing** if split screen or a text message video should live beside your clips, and your sources run to 10 minutes or longer.
- **Choose VEED** if you prefer a browser editor, can pay for a year up front, and your sources are over two minutes.
- **Choose GPT-Video** if clips are the entire job and typing a request beats selecting words. Its free access lets you try it on 50 credits over two weeks, so feed it a single recording and judge the result against your own footage. The [AI clip generator](/features/ai-clip-generator) is the place to begin.

Most of the alternatives can be started without paying, and Pictory gives a trial, so send one recording through a pair of them and keep whichever output you would publish. Every GPT-Video plan is listed on the [pricing page](/pricing), and the [alternatives hub](/alternatives) holds the remaining comparisons.

## Questions

### Which Descript alternative has a no-cost tier?

Riverside gives 2 hours of recording once, Kapwing gives 10 credits, and VEED and CapCut both have a tier at no cost with limits. Pictory offers a 14-day trial instead. GPT-Video has no lasting free plan. New accounts get free access instead, 50 credits that expire after 14 days and need no card, and Starter at $19 a month is the first paid plan.

### What replaces editing by deleting words in a transcript?

Riverside also edits on the transcript, with unlimited text-based editing on Pro. Pictory works from scripts and text. In GPT-Video you write a sentence to Editor Assistant and it changes the clip on screen. Kapwing, VEED and CapCut are conventional editors you work in directly.

### Which Descript alternative costs least for one person?

On monthly billing, GPT-Video Starter at $19 and CapCut Pro at $19.99 are the lowest, then Descript and Kapwing at $24. VEED Creator works out to $12.25 a month, but only its yearly price was read. The plans meter different things, so test one recording.

### Which of these tools have an API or an MCP server?

Descript has both, and Pictory has both on its API plan. VEED has an API and an MCP server that generates talking-avatar video. Kapwing has an MCP connector, Riverside lists an API on its custom plan, and GPT-Video has an MCP connector only.

### Can any of these tools post my clips for me?

CapCut lists one-click posting to TikTok and YouTube, and Riverside's MCP server posts to five networks on Grow and above. Descript lists multi-platform publishing on its homepage. GPT-Video never posts: it ends at the exported file on every plan, and you publish it yourself.
