# GPT-Video vs Descript: a clip tool you talk to, against an editor you type in

For turning a long recording into vertical clips, GPT-Video is the one to try. You change a clip by telling Editor Assistant what you want, and an eight-tool MCP connector lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor find and export clips for you. Descript is the better editor for everything else, with a no-cost plan, a full transcript editor and an API.

## The short answer

Descript and GPT-Video both start from a recording, but they end up in different places. Descript is an editor for whole projects. GPT-Video does one job, which is finding the moments in a long recording that work as vertical clips and finishing them as 9:16 files. Two things set it apart for that job.

The first is how you edit. In GPT-Video you write a sentence to Editor Assistant and it changes the clip on screen. The second is that you can leave the clip search and the export to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, through an MCP connector with eight tools.

Descript is stronger on breadth, on API access and on a no-cost plan that does not run out. The sections below give both sides and the cost of a real month.

## Where GPT-Video is stronger

**You describe the change.** Descript's core idea is editing video by deleting words in a transcript. That is fast for cutting a sentence, and it is less direct for a request like "start on the strongest line" or "move the captions off the buttons". In GPT-Video you type that request to Editor Assistant, it applies it to the clip you are looking at, and an undo is always there. More on [vibe editing](/vibe-editing).

**The MCP connector is built around clips.** Descript also ships an MCP server that works with Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, so this is not a gap on their side. The difference is the scope. GPT-Video's eight tools let the assistant find clips in an uploaded video and export them as files. Two of the tools, `find_clips` and `export_clip`, spend plan credits and need an explicit confirm, so an agent cannot burn through a month by accident. Setup is on the [MCP page](/developers/mcp).

**The reframe follows the speaker.** GPT-Video centers each vertical crop on the speaker's face. Descript's clip maker page describes highlighting parts of the transcript and adding animated captions. Neither automatic reframing nor face tracking appears there. For a podcast where people lean and move, that decides whether you fix the framing yourself. See [auto reframe](/features/auto-reframe).

**Each pick comes with a reason.** After transcribing, GPT-Video scores each moment, then prints the opening hook of every clip next to the sentence behind its rank, which makes a weak pick easy to reject. Anything like it is not confirmed on the Descript pages we read.

**A clip tool's meter.** A GPT-Video credit buys one Standard minute of the video you upload. Draft is billed at half that rate, and Maximum at 2.5 times it. Descript counts media minutes and, separately, AI credits.

## Side by side

| Feature | GPT-Video | Descript |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Main job | Long recording into vertical clips | General editor, edits by deleting words in the transcript |
| How you edit | Sentences to Editor Assistant, every change undoable | Transcript editing and the Underlord AI editor |
| Entry plan | Starter, $19 a month, 250 credits | Hobbyist, $24 a month ($16 billed annually), 10 media hours |
| Mid plan | Creator, $49 a month, 800 credits, small team | Creator, $35 a month ($24 billed annually), 30 media hours, per person |
| Meters | One credit pool | Two: media minutes and AI credits |
| No-cost plan | No permanent plan; free access for new accounts: 50 credits for 14 days, no card | 60 media minutes a month, 720p, watermark |
| Face reframe | Centers on the speaker's face | Not confirmed on their public pages |
| Why a clip was picked | Hook and line shown | Not confirmed on their public pages |
| MCP | Yes, eight tools for finding and exporting clips | Yes, for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor; plans that include it not stated |
| API | HTTP API from Creator | Available to all paying users; cannot export media files yet |
| AI voices | English and Italian | AI voices, text-to-speech and avatars |
| Posting | None, the product ends at the exported file | Multi-platform publishing listed on its homepage |

## Where Descript is stronger

- **A no-cost plan.** 60 media minutes a month at 720p with a watermark, and 100 AI credits that are granted once. GPT-Video has no monthly allowance of this kind. Its free access is a single batch of 50 credits with a 14-day limit.
- **API for every paying user.** It can import media, trigger Underlord edits and publish a project to a share link. GPT-Video has an MCP connector and API access that opens with Creator.
- **A full editor.** AI voices, text-to-speech, AI avatars, eye contact correction, green screen and B-roll generation go well beyond clipping.
- **Storage.** Creator includes 1 TB, and exports reach 4K without a watermark on Creator and Business.
- **Integrations.** A Zapier connection and a command line sit next to the MCP server.

GPT-Video stops at the exported file. It does not post, does not schedule, takes the file itself rather than a link. GPT-Video also offers programmatic access behind the Creator and Studio plans.

## What a real month costs

Take a podcaster who records 10 hours a month, which comes to 600 minutes. On GPT-Video that needs 600 credits at Standard. Starter holds only 250, so we use Creator, with 800 credits for $49 a month. Starter plus a $25 top-up of 500 credits would come to $44, with less room and no 4K. Billed yearly, you pay for 10 months and get 12, so the year costs $490, which averages $40.83 across twelve months.

On Descript, 10 media hours is exactly the allowance of Hobbyist, which is $24 a month. That is about $0.04 a minute of media, and $25 a month less than Creator on GPT-Video. Billed annually Hobbyist is $16 a month, so $192 a year. On price alone, Descript wins this month.

Three things the number leaves out. Hobbyist has no spare room, because every upload or recording counts against the 10 hours, including test runs. Clips and other AI features draw on its 400 AI credits, and the pages we read do not say how many a clip run takes. And the price is per person, so two editors on Hobbyist are $48 a month, against $49 for Creator on GPT-Video, which has room for a small team. Run one real episode through both before you decide.

## What you give up by moving

If you leave Descript for clipping, you lose the transcript editor, the voices and avatars, the API and the free tier. You keep working from the file you upload, and you post the clips yourself.

You gain a face-centered crop, a reason beside every pick, a single credit pool and an assistant that can take the whole job from a chat in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. Nothing stops you from keeping Descript for full episodes and using GPT-Video only for the clips. If that suits you, create an account and confirm the email address. The free access that follows, while places last, gives 50 credits and 14 days to try it with no card. Put a single long recording through and judge the clips on your own footage. Every plan and top-up is listed on the [pricing page](/pricing).

## Choose Descript if

- You want a no-cost plan that refills every month. It has 60 media minutes a month, at 720p with a watermark.
- You edit whole videos or podcasts, not only clips, and want AI voices, avatars, eye contact correction, green screen and B-roll in the same app.
- You need an API for every paying user, plus a Zapier connection.
- You want 1 TB of storage on the Creator plan.

## Choose GPT-Video if

- The work is turning podcasts, interviews or streams into vertical clips, with the picture centered on the speaker's face.
- You would rather say what to change in a sentence than work on a transcript.
- You want an assistant in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to find and export clips, with a confirm step before credits are spent.
- You want to read why each clip was picked before you spend time on it.
- You prefer a single meter that counts the minutes of source you upload.

## Questions

### Is GPT-Video a good Descript alternative?

It is a good alternative if your main job is turning long recordings into vertical clips. It is a poor swap if you rely on Descript to edit full episodes, record in Rooms, generate AI voices or use avatars, because GPT-Video does not do those jobs.

### How do you edit in GPT-Video compared with Descript?

In Descript you edit by deleting words in the transcript. In GPT-Video you write a sentence to Editor Assistant, such as tighter pauses or captions moved higher, and it applies the change to the clip on screen. Every change can be undone.

### Do both tools work with Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor?

Yes, both have an MCP server for them. GPT-Video's has eight tools built around finding and exporting clips, and the two that spend credits wait for an explicit confirm. Descript's help center does not say which of its plans include the MCP.

### Which costs less for a month of podcast clips?

On paper Descript does. Ten hours of recording fits its Hobbyist plan at $24 a month, while on GPT-Video the same hours cost $49 on Creator, or $44 as Starter plus one top-up. The comparison on this page shows what that price leaves out, including AI credits and per-person pricing.

### Can I try GPT-Video before paying, as I can with Descript?

Yes, for a limited time. A new account that confirms its email gets free access with 50 credits, valid for 14 days, and no card is asked for. Places are limited. Unlike Descript's plan it does not refill each month, and Starter at $19 a month is the first paid plan. Our free browser tools at /tools, from the subtitle burner to the safe zone checker, need no account, but none of them makes clips.
